Restaurant Review: Mexican Sugar

{Mexican Sugar}

We had the pleasure of dining at Mexican Sugar in Plano a week ago. Before going to Mexican Sugar we researched the menu and were impressed by how many healthy options there are. Mexican Sugar redefines Mexican food with its emphasis on fresher, lighter and tastier Latin cuisine that uses the best possible local ingredients, fresh fish and a live wood grill to create a flavorful menu of “handmade everything.” Its small batch cocktails flow from taps while soft candles and intoxicating Latin rhythms set a warm and sultry tone.

When we arrived, the atmosphere was filled with fun, vibrant energy and we were impressed by the beautiful interior of Mexican Sugar. Edison light bulb fixtures and cool chandeliers hung from the ceiling, beautiful tile work everywhere, and very comfortable seating options abound. There’s definitely a ‘chicness’ to the place.

We sat in a cozy booth that faced the kitchen so we were able to see all the action! I love a view into a kitchen, it brings me back to the days when I went to school at The Culinary Institute of America! Our waiter was wonderful and very knowledgeable, even the manager stopped by our table to see how we were doing. The service at Mexican Sugar is fantastic, to say the least. Drinks

  • Sangria Roja
  • Jalisco Old Fashioned
  • Decero Malbec
  • Mezcal Tasting

I started with the Sangria Roja and my fiancé had an Jalisco Old Fashioned with tequila. For dinner I went with one of the Decero Malbec from Argentina and Chris being interested in trying some mezcal was presented with a full on tasting. Again, talk about service! Our waiter, Juan Carlo, launched into a full on mezcal education session. So great!

The Food

  • Guacamole – this is some of the best guacamole we have had in DFW and that’s saying something
  • Ceviche – we loved how fresh everything tasted and the marinade was so fantastic I could have eaten what was left in the bowl like a soup
  • Snapper Filet – Delightful!
  • Carne Asada tacos – we loved their freshly made corn tortillas and you can also have your tacos made with lettuce cups
  • Elote ‘Street Style’ – Tasty!

Other Recommendations (what we want next time)

  • Arepas
  • Queso Blanco
  • Hearts of Palm Citrus Salad
  • Hamburguesa – a very popular menu item. A couple of these passed our table and they looked delicious
  • Lump Crab Enchiladas
  • Mesquite Grilled Salmon
