Fun Things To Do In Oklahoma City!

We’re partnering with Visit OKC to share with you a fun foodie themed Oklahoma City weekend itinerary. Oklahoma City is an unexpected destination for traveling foodies. Keep reading to find out where to go and why!

First, Oklahoma City is an easy drive up I-35N that only takes about three hours from Dallas. On the way you’ll pass casinos, open green pastures with cows and horses, and drive through some beautiful rock cliff structures. If you have time, we also suggest you stop in Norman Oklahoma, where you can visit OU, go to the fantastic Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, National Weather Center or stop in for a quick coffee/bite to eat at one of the many good restaurants and coffee shops. On to our fun fueled foodie adventure through Oklahoma City!

{Friday}

• Check into 21c Museum Hotel Oklahoma City
• Grab a cocktail at Mary Eddy’s Kitchen & Lounge (located within 21c)
• Head to an early dinner at the local favorite Cheever’s Cafe
• Explore the area by foot after dinner and stumble upon The Pump outdoor bar and patio (recommended by our friend and local @allysoninwonderland)
• Head back to hotel

The Chicken Fried Steak at Cheever’s Cafe is absolutely amazing! It’s packed with bold, savory flavors and is rich and hearty like a good CFS should be. This dish is comfort food at its finest.

The Roasted Pecan Ice Cream Ball is a must-order, even if you’re “too full” for dessert. It’s made out of vanilla ice cream rolled in pecans roasted with brown sugar and red chile and then the ball is topped with delicious chocolate sauce. Yum!

The ambiance at Cheever’s Cafe is upscale, yet relaxed and lively. It was the perfect place for dinner to kick off our OKC weekend getaway and we highly recommend adding it to your list too!

After dinner at Cheever’s Cafe, we explored the surrounding area by foot and stumbled upon The Pump, an awesome bar with a fun 9,000 sq. foot outdoor patio. The structure used to be an old gas station and the new owners converted the space into a laid back bar and gathering spot.

OKC is undergoing a wave of revitalization where old spaces are being revamped into exciting new ventures that are breathing new life into the city. The Pump is the perfect place to grab a drink before or after dinner or to relax with friends while enjoying an adult beverage. We suggest one of their many craft beers on tap!

After checking into the Ambassador for our second night in OKC, we headed to Kitchen No. 324 – the perfect spot for brunch in OKC! The restaurant’s bright and welcoming ambiance will immediately draw you in and the menu is sure to please with a variety of brunch classics created with a fresh twist. Kitchen No. 324 is an “American Rustic cafe” that also features a craft bakery where pastries and confections are made fresh daily in addition to a fantastic coffee bar.

After brunch, we walked over to The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. The 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was one of the most horrific acts of terror in our nation’s history, claiming the lives of 168 people including children. The memorial is very moving and is something everyone should make time to see while in OKC.

After visiting the Memorial, we headed to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Going to art museums is one of our absolute favorite things to do when in a new city, aside from trying out new restaurants! OKCMOA is the perfect addition to any OKC itinerary and is also a great way to escape the afternoon heat for a few hours.

Kehinde Wiley:  A New Republic is a fantastic exhibit and it runs through September 10th! Also, we are big Chihuly fans and were excited to view OKCMOA’s incredible collection of his artwork.

After OKCMOA, we headed to the Plaza District in search of an afternoon snack and to explore the area. The Plaza District has several fun, colorful murals that make for perfect photo backdrops. Discovering murals and street art while traveling is a great way to learn more about the true culture of a place. You can check out the post we did on our favorite Dallas murals here.

The Plaza District has a ton of cute restaurants, bars, art galleries, and shops – making it the perfect area to spend an afternoon exploring!

Craft beer lovers must stop at Oak & Ore to check out the rotating 36-tap selection of beers from Oklahoma and around the World. Oak & Ore also serves brunch, lunch, and dinner. The menus are robust, offering everything from appetizers to snack on to more substantial entrees if you’re wanting a full meal. The white bean dip was the perfect compliment to our beer flight.

The Pritchard Wine Bar is another great spot to check out in the Plaza District. It has an extensive wine list in addition to tempting cocktails and a variety of tantalizing small plates.

Right next door to Oak & Ore is Roxy’s Ice Cream Social, the cutest little ice cream shop and soda fountain! Grab an ice cream cone or a float to cool off from the summer heat.

After a full day of exploring OKC, we headed back to the Midtown area where the Ambassador Hotel is located. Like the Plaza District, Midtown  also offers a variety of dining choices and shopping options if you’re looking to do some additional exploring. We couldn’t resist popping into Mode, a super cute boutique, to do a little shopping before heading back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. Mode has a great selection of accessories and clothing all at amazing prices.

Back at the Ambassador, we relaxed in our room and got ready for dinner at Ludivine – one of the top restaurants in OKC in our opinion. The hotel’s complimentary shuttle service whisked us away to Ludivine for an unforgettable meal and evening.

At the manager’s recommendation, we started the evening in the bar located at the back of the restaurant. The bar has a very chill vibe enhanced by the choice tunes and laid-back atmosphere. The bar offers a creative cocktail menu that changes seasonally. A very lively and fun bartender named Chad, a.k.a. @Chadillac, gave us a run down of the cocktail menu and then made recommendations based on our favorite flavor profiles.

The bar also has an amazing Charcuterie menu! We tried the ultimate Charcuterie board comprised of everything on the Charcuterie menu. It came with Country Pate, Rabbit Liver Mousse, House Cured Salmon, Pork Rillette, Berkshire Lardo, and a delicious selection of cheeses in addition to several other tastey surprises. #FoodieBliss

After enjoying our pre-dinner cocktails and Charcuterie, we were seated in the main dining area at two seats over looking the open kitchen. It was exciting to see the kitchen in action preparing our dinner from scratch and elevated the entire experience. Emily ordered the Chef’s tasting menu with wine pairings and Barbie ordered the Oklahoma Wagyu Sirloin Steak with bleu cheese chorizo sweet potato hash and chimichurri. We thoroughly enjoyed every bite of our meal and can’t recommend Ludivine more highly for dinner in OKC. Seriously, do not miss this gem of a restaurant!

{Sunday}

• Brunch at Mary Eddy’s 
• Stroll through Paseo Arts District (wish we had time to eat at the Picasso Cafe!)
• Myriad Botanical Gardens
• Head back to Dallas

We started our final day in OKC with an incredible brunch at Mary Eddy’s. The Warm Sticky Bun topped with Pecans and Salted Caramel is a must-order as a started for the table! We also loved the Bread Pudding French Toast , Brunch Burger, and the Crispy Chicken Biscuit served with hot pepper relish, honey butter, dukes, watermelon salad, and a sunny egg.

After a very filling brunch, we headed to one of OKC’s most beautiful attractions – The Myriad Botanical Gardens. We loved how the Gardens allow you to immerse yourself in nature while still being right in the middle of the city! Check out our full post on our experience at the Gardens here.

After a whirlwind of a weekend exploring as much of OKC as we could, we were exhausted and hopped on the road back to Dallas and Fort Worth. Thankfully, the road trip is only about three hours, making OKC extremely doable for a weekend getaway. We’re already looking forward to going back to OKC to check out some of the restaurants and places we didn’t have enough time to go.
